The EF 85mm f/1.8 USM is a short telephoto focal length lens which has a large maximum aperture. It has a fast autofocus speed and the most important feature is its portability. The lens has a unique rear focus system which delivers sharp and clear images through the maximum aperture. It is very efficient and delivers clear and sharp images at any aperture. The focus is so fine and detailed that you can move it from the tip of the eyelashes to the eye itself. This would give a subtle yet definite change in the expressive tone. Its natural blur effect is very soft and attractive. The lens has an excellent operability with a fixed front lens to use filters like polarisers and graduates. This is a highly practical lens and is known for its delineation.
Telephoto Lens
Get sharp and clear pictures at all apertures with EF 85mm f/1.8 USM. It has a virtually circular aperture diaphragm gives the out of focus regions a softer, more even feel and allows in- focus regions to stand out against a blurred background. The lens has a non-rotating front element present during focusing, thus enabling you to use specialist filters like polarisers and graduates
Large f/1.8 aperture
A large aperture of f/1.8 allows photographers to shoot in a hand held manner in any situation. Difficult, low light conditions won’t be a barrier anymore. It also restricts depth of field for creative effects
Compressed perspective in portraiture
The short telephoto focal length of EF 85mm f/1.8 USM slightly compresses your perspective. In this way, it reduces the size of all the prominent facial features to give you a prominent result.
Ultrasonic Focusing
There is a ring like ultrasonic motor which drives autofocus very quickly, and in near silence condition. It has an excellent holding torque condition which ensures that the point of focus is reached accurately without overshooting. There is also an option of fulltime manual override, thus making it possible to adjust focus without having the need to leave AF mode.
Super Spectra Coating
The super spectra coating makes sure you get accurate color balance and enhances contrast. You can also reduce flare and ghosting using this. Ghosting is a common problem arising from light bouncing off a camera’s sensor.
Integration with E-TTL II flash metering
The EF 85mm f 1.8 USM is one lens which passes distance information back to a compatible enough EOS camera’s E-TTL II flash system which ensures optimal flash metering.
